Barnard's career began in Melbourne, Australia where he worked with his brother's band. For several years his cornet playing was heard with the Graeme Bell band, and this led to his fronting his own band for over a decade.
Since then he has freelanced and travelled around the world and recorded with Ralph Sutton.
His influences are Louis Armstrong, Buck Clayton and Bobby Hackett.
