Harold Mabern, Jr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee
on March 20th 1936. Spent some of his early years in Chicago and
moved to New York City in the early 1960's where he began to work
with Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer's Jazztet and J.J.Johnson.
Mabern has accompanied many vocalists including Joe
Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Dakota Staton, Irene Reid, and Arthur
Prysock.Also worked with Roland Kirk, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard,
Lee Morgan, Roy Haynes and Wes Montgomery in the late 1960's.
He later worked with Clark Terry, Billy Harper, Joe Newman and
George Coleman, became a member of a seven-piano group under the
direction of Stanley Cowell.
His compositions include "Strozier's Mode",
"Rakin' and Scrapin'", and "A Few Miles from Memphis".
