Since moving to Toronto from Winnipeg in 1990 Mike has become one of the most sought-after bassists. He spent four years in Montreal where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from McGill University. Private studies with jazz greats Dave Holland and Ray Brown have been part of his on-going education..

He has worked with Oliver Jones, Jane Bunnett, Dewey Redman, Dave Leibman, Chris Potter, Peter Erskine, Curtis Fuller, Lew Tabackin, Don Thompson, and Gary Bartz among others, and has appeared on twelve professional recordings including guitarist Lorne Lofsky's Juno-nominated CD "Bill, Please". Mike has an active interest in composition, and some of these appear on several recordings including Richard Whiteman's "This is Now" and most prominently on his own CD "Forces".

He appears in duo context with pianist Whiteman for many club and concert dates.

His bass playing is steeped in the jazz tradition, and he adds to it a unique melodic approach. He recently won the "Prix du Maurier" (best Canadian group) at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, 1996, as part of the Roy Patterson Quartet.
